1. Turn off the stopcock
Usually under the kitchen sink or where the mains pipe enters the house. Turn clockwise until it stops. This halts a burst pipe or a leak instantly.
2. Kill the power if water is near it
If water is coming through a light fitting or near sockets, switch the electrics off at the consumer unit before you do anything else.
3. Open the cold taps
With the stopcock off, running the cold taps drains the pipes and takes the pressure off the leak.
4. Catch and move
Buckets under drips, towels along the floor, and get anything valuable out of the way. Take a photo to send me.
How fast I can get to you
I'm one plumber, not a call centre. I work Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and I'm based in Stoke Canon, ten minutes north of Exeter. When you call during those hours I'll give you a real arrival time. Outside them, I can sometimes come out by arrangement, and if I can't, I'll tell you straight away rather than leave you hanging.

Overflowing toilets, blocked sinks and showers, gullies backing up outside. Cleared on the spot with proper drain rods and a plunger pump where needed.
No hot water or heating
Boiler faults, failed immersion heaters and cold radiators are all mine to sort, with gas work carried out with P Harman, Gas Safe registered. I'll get you safe and warm first, then talk about any bigger repair.
Overflowing tanks and cisterns
Ballcocks stuck open, overflow pipes running outside, tanks in the loft filling too high. Quick to fix once diagnosed and far cheaper than the water damage they cause.
Leaking or failed appliances
Washing machine and dishwasher hoses, leaking outside taps, dripping stopcocks. Common, messy and usually a one-visit repair.

How quickly can you get to a plumbing emergency in Exeter?
Same day, during working hours. I'm based in Stoke Canon, about 10 minutes from the city, so most Exeter addresses are 20 to 40 minutes away once I'm on my way. Call 07766 501664 and I'll give you a realistic arrival time there and then, not a promise I can't keep.
Are you available evenings, weekends or bank holidays?
My hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Outside those hours I can sometimes come out by arrangement, so it's always worth a call. If I can't help, I'll say so straight away so you're not left waiting.
What does an emergency callout cost?
£110 for an emergency callout, which includes getting to you, finding the fault and the first hour of work. Most emergencies are fixed inside that hour. If it runs over, it's £75 to £85 an hour after that, and I'll tell you before I carry on. Parts are quoted before they're fitted.
What should I do while I wait?
Turn off the water at the stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink or where the main pipe enters the house. If water is near anything electrical, switch off the power at the consumer unit. Put buckets under drips and move anything valuable. Then call me and describe what you can see.
Can you deal with a boiler emergency?
Yes. No heating and no hot water are things I can fix, and gas boiler faults are handled with P Harman, a Gas Safe registered engineer. If it's a full boiler replacement, I'll get you going safely first and quote for the replacement separately.
