How I approach it

Most blockages are fat, wipes, hair or a build-up in a trap or gully, and they clear on the first visit with rods, a plunger pump and a bit of method. I also tell you why it blocked so it doesn't happen again next month.

What I deal with

Kitchen sinks

Fat and food waste in the trap and the first run of pipe. Cleared, and the waste rebuilt if the fittings are the real problem.

Bathroom sinks and showers

Hair and soap scum. Cleared and the trap cleaned out properly.

Toilets

Wipes, sanitary products, toys. Plunger pump first, then rods if it's further down.

Outside gullies and drains

Rodded and cleared to the inspection chamber. Roots and collapsed pipes get an honest opinion rather than a quick clear that won't last.

Whose drain is it?

If the blockage is in the shared sewer beyond your boundary, that's South West Water's job, and they don't charge. I'll tell you if that's what I find.

Keeping it clear

No fat down the sink, no wipes down the loo, a strainer in the shower, and a bucket of hot water and soda crystals down the kitchen sink once a month.

Questions people ask

Can you clear a blocked drain quickly?

Usually on the same visit, during working hours. Ring and I'll give you an honest arrival time.

Why does my drain keep blocking?

Fat and grease, wipes, hair, roots getting into an old clay pipe, or a pipe that's dropped and holds water. Clearing it is the easy part; I'll tell you which of those it is.

Do you charge a callout fee?

£110 for an emergency callout, which includes the first hour. Most blockages are cleared inside that. Booked, non-urgent clears are £60 an hour with no callout fee.

Are you Gas Safe registered?

I work with P Harman, a Gas Safe registered engineer, who carries out and signs off the gas work: boiler installations, repairs and annual servicing. We work together on projects, so you get one point of contact and the gas side certified under a current registration. His ID card is shown at the door and his registration can be checked on the Gas Safe Register. For oil boilers I trained with OFTEC and have years of hands-on experience, though I'm not currently OFTEC registered, so I'll tell you plainly if a job needs a registered installer to sign it off.

When can you come?

Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Same-day for breakdowns where I can, and an honest arrival time when you ring. Out-of-hours by arrangement only.
