How I approach it
Central heating is more than the boiler. Half the cold-house calls I get are a stuck valve, a tired pump, a system full of sludge or a thermostat in the wrong room. I look at the whole system before recommending anything, and I'll tell you if the fix is a £60 valve rather than a £2,000 boiler.

Circulating pumps, motorised and diverter valves, the usual suspects when the heating works but the hot water doesn't, or vice versa.
Controls and thermostats
Room stats, programmers, smart controls like Hive and Nest, TRVs on every radiator so rooms heat when you want them.
New radiators
Replacing rusted ones, adding a radiator to a cold room, moving one for a new kitchen. Supplied and fitted from £120.
Full systems
New central heating in houses that never had it, or a full replacement of a tired one, designed and quoted properly.

Questions people ask
My radiators are cold at the bottom. What's wrong?
Sludge. Iron oxide settles in the bottom of radiators and stops them heating. A power flush clears it and a magnetic filter stops it coming back. Cold at the top is air, which is a bleed.
Can you add a radiator to an existing system?
Usually, yes, as long as the boiler has the capacity. Supplied and fitted from £120 to £300 depending on size and how far the pipework has to run.
Do you fit smart thermostats?
Yes, Hive, Nest, Tado and the manufacturer's own controls. A good smart stat pays for itself in a couple of winters.
Are you Gas Safe registered?
I work with P Harman, a Gas Safe registered engineer, who carries out and signs off the gas work: boiler installations, repairs and annual servicing. We work together on projects, so you get one point of contact and the gas side certified under a current registration. His ID card is shown at the door and his registration can be checked on the Gas Safe Register. For oil boilers I trained with OFTEC and have years of hands-on experience, though I'm not currently OFTEC registered, so I'll tell you plainly if a job needs a registered installer to sign it off.
When can you come?
Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Same-day for breakdowns where I can, and an honest arrival time when you ring. Out-of-hours by arrangement only.
